New Year’s Resolution for Business Leaders:
Take Stock of Office Bookshelves
Many business leaders start the new year by reassessing their plans and goals. According to business book author Ed Barks, it’s also a good time to enrich their office library, particularly since January is Business & Reference Books Month.
“Executives know they must command resources effectively. The new year is the right time to make sure your business library has the learning and reference resources you need at your fingertips,” said Barks, the author of The Truth About Public Speaking: The Three Keys to Great Presentations.
He offers these five tips designed to fortify the bookshelves of any professional office:
- Take a quick inventory of your office bookshelf.
- Assess what necessities you lack. Every office needs a comprehensive dictionary and a thesaurus, for example.
- Determine which publications need to be updated.
- Consult with office mates and with colleagues in other organizations to learn which books they consider indispensable.
- Fill in any weaknesses by ordering through your favorite local bookstore or online (a tip if you purchase online: Buying more than one book at a time often saves on shipping costs).
“Look for any gaps in books that cover your specific area of expertise,” Barks suggested. “For instance, every doctor’s office needs the latest version of the Physician’s Desk Reference. No public affairs executive should be caught without a copy of The Almanac of American Politics. And public relations professionals need a good set of media directories.”
Barks’ book, The Truth About Public Speaking, is targeted toward business leaders and other professionals. It unlocks the secrets of Barks’ easy to remember Three Keys to Great Presentations™. The book is available from the publisher, Ogmios Publishing, at www.TruthAboutPublicSpeaking.com, and at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, booksamillion.com, walmart.com, and at bookstores everywhere.
