Lifelong Learning a Nonstop Process,
Barks Counsels in ASAE Article
The importance of lifelong learning is the focus of an article by Ed Barks in the June 2009 issue of Professional Development Forum Online, a publication of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
The article, “School's Out! But Don't Ignore Your Need for Lifelong Learning,” notes that, while school is now out for children, their parents need to remain vigilant about their own professional development.
As Barks wrote in the article, “Lifelong learning is a must for those who hope to advance their careers. Indeed, in today's economy, taking steps to advance your professional development may be necessary just to hold on to your job.”
Lifelong learning has long been a cornerstone of Barks’ training philosophy, and his most recent article presents an opportunity to advance that belief.
Barks called learning “a process, not an event,” adding, “polished communicators and authorities in any field are dedicated lifelong learners. They realize the only way to keep their careers moving forward involves practice and learning over time.”
While he believes that passive learning methods such as books, podcasts, and webinars are fine for beginners, he recommends a hands-on approach for the executive who is serious about lifelong learning. He writes, “it is wise to solicit the guidance of a seasoned expert who knows how to help you overcome the obstacles you face. Your expert must be capable of helping you map out and execute that plan and be capable of steering your progress as your professional development advances.”
He concludes the article by writing, “School is never out for the successful association executive. Your career depends on it.”
Ed Barks works with corporate and association executives who need a magnetic message and sharp communications skills, and with public affairs and public relations experts who counsel their bosses and clients. The former radio broadcaster is the author of The Truth About Public Speaking: The Three Keys to Great Presentations. As President of Barks Communications since 1997, he has taught more than 3000 business leaders, association executives, government officials, athletes, entertainers, non-profit executives, and public relations staff how to succeed when they deal with the media, deliver presentations, and testify before government officials.
