New Fifth Edition of Media Guidebook Extends Lifelong Learning

What phrases make reporters see red? How should executives act during radio talk shows and satellite TV interviews? Those questions are now answered in the newly issued fifth edition of Face the Press with Confidence: The Media Interview Companion.

Face the Press with Confidence is one more way we work to encourage our clients to augment their lifelong learning beyond the four walls of the training room,” author Ed Barks said. “The revised guide serves as an ongoing resource that fosters learning over time—an important aspect for any executive or professional who hopes to succeed when dealing with the press.”

Barks clients who participate in an executive media training workshop receive personal copies of the publication to help reinforce the learning from their session.

The expanded fifth edition incorporates new practice exercises that explain how to rehearse for TV field interviews, editorial board visits, and telephone interviews with radio reporters.

It also contains four new lists designed to help readers navigate the media waters. They include:

  • Eighteen Methods Guaranteed to Alienate a Reporter. Among Barks’ tips: Never say, “No comment.” These two small yet inflammatory words will convince reporters that you have something to hide.
  • Top 10 Satellite Media Interview Techniques. For instance, keep your messages short and succinct; you won’t have time to state more than two or three high-level points.
  • Twelve Tips Toward Radio Talk Show Preparation Success. Barks’ advice includes producing a mock talk show in which your “host” peppers the “guest” with tough questions.
  • Twelve Ways to Act During a Radio Talk Show. He recommends repeating your message numerous times, even during a short interview since radio audiences listen actively for only short bursts of time.
Face the Press with Confidence is available online for $19.95 from the Barks Learning Network at www.barkscomm.com/products. Arrangements for discounted group purchases may be made by calling Barks Communications at (540) 955-0600.

Barks Communications also can co-brand the publication for its clients and public relations agency collaborators. “Our co-branding opportunities are a great way for public relations, public affairs, and medical education agencies to say top of mind with their clients,” company President Ed Barks noted.

Agency principals wishing to discuss co-branding opportunities should call him directly at (540) 955-0600.

Ed Barks works with corporate and association executives who need to communicate effectively in public, and with consultants who want to keep their clients happy. He is author of the book The Truth About Public Speaking: The Three Keys to Great Presentations. As President of Barks Communications since 1997 and a former radio broadcaster, he has taught more than 3000 business leaders, association executives, government officials, athletes, entertainers, non-profit executives, and public relations staff how to succeed when they deal with the media.
